Growing up I learned a lot living and working on my family’s Reliance ranch and am fortunate to be able to continue the legacy of my parents. As a third-generation rancher my wife, Brenda, and I operate a commercial cow/calf and yearling operation. My four children, along with their spouses, and our twelve grandchildren all help on the ranch as well. Time with family is the whole idea. Before we were even married, we talked about the fact that we wanted this to be a family ranching operation where the kids would feel like they fit right in and where we could all have fun together.
Many years ago, a Priest shared some words of wisdom with me that I will never forget. He told me, ‘If you don’t hear babies crying in the pews, you just as well lock the doors because your church is dying’. I like to apply this wisdom to the agricultural and community organizations I am involved in. I invest my time and energy for my community and other organizations for the next generation. I’m always working to make things better for our children and grandchildren. I feel that if you have been blessed in your life, like we have been, you should take the time to give back.
Over the years, I have made time to give back to the local community as well as South Dakota’s greater agriculture community. I currently serve on the Beef Industry Council Executive Committee and have been on the South Dakota Farmers Union State Board of Directors since 2018. I am a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers, R-CALF, Reliance Area Community Development Group, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Council, and the Reliance Volunteer Fire Department, as well as a supervisor on the Oacoma Township Board. I have served on the Chamberlain School Board and I am a past leader of the Missouri Valley Horseman’s Club. Brenda and I also actively support 4-H and high school rodeo.
